The Lord Rejoiced

I was up in God’s country, up on a mountain early
and, of course, I fell in love

with the cramping forests, the beautiful hours,
and the plans of my enemies.

The makers on this side
and the makers on that side
know I’m taking their things

and a man I don’t know, not talking, looks down
on my small town,

knocks over a glass and stands up to leave.
The plans of my enemies are known

and the sunset looks like the lid
on top of the box they’re in,
which is the world to come.
